Till 1803 Salzburg was a small state on it's own.  Even before Roman times, people lived on the castle mountain.  The first stone buildings on that spot where build around the year 1140.   From castle "Festung Hohensalzburg" one can see a breathtaking view of the city Salzburg, with lots of places of interest.
